In order to meet LEED Silver standards, many new sustainable features were used, including large windows and skylights to provide natural light, a new green roof, ground source heat pump to heat and cool the new wing, radiant floor heating and a fan-assisted natural ventilation system for heating the new library. Throughout the facility new mechanical control systems were installed as well as a new lighting controls system with daylight and occupancy sensors. The second phase involved 191,000sf of major improvements to the academic core of the school. The first phase consisted of a 14,700sf addition and a 12,500sf renovation to house a new library, lobby area, weight room and radio studio. It has a student teacher ratio of 17.4 to 1. Nathan Hale High School is the 27th largest public high school in Wisconsin and the 3,077th largest nationally. It has 1,571 students in grades 9th through 12th. In 2009, KNHC moved into its new studio at Nathan Hale High School. In 2003, The Village Voice recognized KNHC as “Best of New York” high school radio stations thanks to its internet streaming, and the next year became the first non-commercial station in the United States to join the Billboard Magazine Dance Radio Airplay panel. In the 1990’s KNHC renovated its studio and production facilities, began a student training program, launched its first website, and in 1997 began operating a digital music stream from its studios. Through the 1970’s and 80’s, the station increased its broadcast area.

After construction and test broadcasts were complete, a 10 watt license was granted on. In June 1970, an application was filed with the FCC to establish an FM signal on 89.5 MHz. Owned by Seattle Public Schools, C89.5 is operated by professional staff and students of Nathan Hale High School’s electronic media course, who gain experience in production, programming, on-air presentation, and music selection. C89.5 is also an educational organization, providing career-connected learning opportunities for hundreds of students. Dance, dance, dance!
